Our demands
Extinction Rebellion NYC (XR NYC) is part of the decentralized, non-partisan, international Extinction Rebellion movement. We are an anti-authoritarian climate and social justice movement using non-violent direct action to persuade local, state and federal government, media, corporations, and the power elite to halt mass extinction and social collapse.
1. TELL THE TRUTH
We the people demand truth
Governments, media, corporations, and the power elite must acknowledge the climate and ecological emergency and end the disinformation, distraction, and greenwashing of this crisis that serve authoritarian power and the status quo.
2. ACT NOW
We demand that every part of society act now to avert further destruction of our ecosystems by predatory economic, political, industrial, and social systems.
Earth is now in danger of environmental collapse: seven of nine key ecological systems that maintain livable conditions for humanity have exceeded safe limits.* Society must change its relationships with the natural world and all living things, recognizing that the planet is sacred, ensuring plants, animals, people, land, air and water will thrive.
3. RADICAL DEMOCRACY
We demand truly democratic government and institutions through binding Civic Assemblies.
Real climate action requires real democracy. Our survival should not be in the hands of authoritarians, corporations and the power elite who are driving ecological collapse for their own interests. We demand participatory culture and collective care in every sphere of life producing real democracy from the ground up.
4. JUSTICE FOR ALL LIFE
We demand a just transition and an end to all systems of oppression
The destruction of people and the destruction of the Earth are inseparable. Systems of oppression like fascism, genocide, ecocide, racism, militarism, patriarchy, and religious oppression drive ecological destruction and social collapse and must end. We stand in solidarity with those most impacted by these systems, by supporting reparations, remediation, indigenous sovereignty, and the legal rights of ecosystems, in order to maintain a livable planet and have justice for all.
Understanding the urgency: "If we don't protect nature, we can't protect ourselves." (5:34)
Our Principles
1. we have a shared vision of change
Creating a world that is fit for generations to come.
2. we set our mission on what is necessary
Mobilizing 3.5% of the population to achieve system change - using ideas such as "Momentum-driven organizing" to achieve this.
3. we need a regenerative culture
Creating a culture which is healthy, resilient and adaptable.
4. we openly challenge ourselves and our toxic system
Leaving our comfort zones to take action for change.
5. we value reflecting and learning
Following a cycle of action, reflection, learning, and planning for more action. Learning from other movements and contexts as well as our own experiences.
6. we welcome everyone and every part of everyone
Working actively to create safer and more accessible spaces.
7. we actively mitigate for power
Breaking down hierarchies of power for more equitable participation.
8. we avoid blaming and shaming
We live in a toxic system, but no one individual is to blame.
9. we are a nonviolent network
Using nonviolent strategy and tactics as the most effective way to bring about change.
10. we are based on autonomy and decentralisation
We collectively create the structures we need to challenge power.
Anyone who follows these core principles and values can take action in the name of Extinction Rebellion.
All are welcome who want to adhere to our principles and values.
All who participate in XR actions must abide by our action consensus and rebel agreement.
